What is a home study?

On Behalf of | Mar 4, 2021 | Adoptions |

Before you can adopt a child in Pennsylvania, you’ll have to complete a home study. A home study helps the adoption agency to determine whether you could provide a good home for the child. You’ll also get the chance to ask questions and prepare yourself for the possibility of adoption.

What happens during a home study?

During a home study, you’ll meet with an agency employee to talk about adoption and your plans for raising a child. The agent will visit your home at least once to get an idea of what the child’s upbringing might be like. Many adoptions involve abused or neglected children, so the agency needs to know that you’re prepared for the challenges of raising a child.

A home study isn’t just for the child’s benefit — it’s also for your benefit. You’ll get the chance to ask questions about raising a child, particularly if the child has special needs. Some adoption agencies help parents get financial aid and find support groups after they adopt a child. You can also learn more about the child you want to adopt and adjust your expectations accordingly.

If you want to adopt a child, you’ll have to jump through a lot of hoops before you get custody of the child. An adoption attorney could help you bring a new child into your home.

Do you need an attorney when you apply for adoption?

On its own, adoption can cost thousands of dollars. An attorney might sound like yet another expense on the pile. However, no adoption is guaranteed until you get full custody of the child. A lot could go wrong during the adoption process, especially if the child’s biological parents show up. An attorney could help you take on any challenge and ensure that you end up with full custody.
